“The ACT program at the Barnard Center was one of the most transformative experiences of my professional life. Dr. Nucha Isarowong brings so much kindness, depth, and clarity—he helped create a space where we could grapple with the colonial roots of our field while still honoring what’s useful in theories like attachment and psychodynamics. Instead of throwing the baby out with the bathwater, we learned to center diverse perspectives, question assumptions, and adapt our approaches to be truly responsive to the families and communities we serve. What made it even more powerful was the sense of connection. I got to learn alongside brilliant, justice-oriented providers who are just as passionate about infant mental health as they are about equity. The program deeply emphasized holding families in their full context—culturally, historically, relationally—and constantly reminded us that healing happens in relationship, not in isolation. If you’re looking for a program that weaves together clinical depth, community, and a strong commitment to decolonizing this work, ACT is it.
This training has been a guiding light in my work in perinatal and early childhood mental health. It inspired me to co-create a new program in partnership with midwives at Rainier Valley Community Clinic, where we center culturally responsive care, parent-infant connection, and community healing. Even in today’s political climate, ACT encouraged me to lean deeper into my values—to help families build resilience, connection, and community from the very beginning.”
